Potting:
- Container & Soil: Choose a pot with good drainage and fill it with well-draining, moderately fertile soil. Nasturtiums actually bloom better in poor soil, as overly rich soil promotes leafy growth over flowers.
- Sowing: Sow seeds about ½ inch deep and space them 3-4 inches apart. You can sow seeds directly outdoors after the last frost or start them indoors a few weeks earlier.
Growing:
- Light: Nasturtiums thrive in full sun but can tolerate partial shade, especially in warmer climates.
- Temperature: Ideal temperatures for growth are between 55-70°F (13-21°C). They prefer cool to mild temperatures and may wilt in extreme heat.
Watering:
- Frequency: Water moderately, keeping the soil slightly moist but not soggy. Once established, nasturtiums are somewhat drought-tolerant.
- Drainage: Ensure good drainage, as waterlogged soil can lead to root rot.
Maintenance:
- Deadheading: Remove spent flowers to encourage continuous blooming.
- Fertilizing: Nasturtiums generally don’t need fertilizer. Excess nutrients can lead to more leaves than flowers.
- Pests: Nasturtiums can attract aphids. Consider using organic pest control methods if necessary, or plant nasturtiums near other plants to act as a natural pest deterrent.
