Potting:
- Container & Soil: Choose a pot with good drainage holes and fill it with rich, well-draining soil. Fuchsia prefers soil that retains some moisture but drains well, so a mix of potting soil with compost or peat moss works best.
- Sowing: Start fuchsia seeds indoors 10-12 weeks before the last frost. Press seeds gently onto the surface of the soil, as they need light to germinate.
Growing:
- Light: Fuchsia does best in partial shade or dappled sunlight. Full sun can be too harsh, so place in a spot with morning sun and afternoon shade.
- Temperature: Ideal temperatures for germination are around 70°F (21°C). Once grown, fuchsia prefers cooler temperatures (60-70°F or 15-21°C) and can struggle in extreme heat.
Watering:
- Frequency: Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during blooming, but avoid overwatering. Let the top inch of soil dry out slightly before watering again.
- Drainage: Ensure excellent drainage, as fuchsia roots are sensitive to soggy soil.
Maintenance:
- Pruning: Pinch back growing tips on young plants to encourage bushier growth. Regularly remove dead flowers to promote continuous blooming.
- Fertilizing: Feed with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer every 2-4 weeks during the growing season to encourage vibrant flowers.
- Pest Control: Watch for aphids and whiteflies, which can affect fuchsia. Use organic insecticides as needed.
