Growing Instructions:
- Sowing: Plant Detroit beet seeds directly in the garden after the last frost, about ½ inch deep, and 1–2 inches apart. You can also start them indoors 4–6 weeks before the last frost date and transplant them outside once the soil is workable.
- Soil: Choose loose, well-drained soil with a pH between 6.0 and 7.5. Add compost or organic matter for best results.
- Spacing: Once seedlings are 2 inches tall, thin them to about 3–4 inches apart to allow room for root development.
Watering:
- Keep the soil consistently moist, but not waterlogged. Beets need about 1 inch of water per week. Water at the base of the plant to avoid wetting the foliage.
Temperature:
- Detroit beets thrive in cooler temperatures, ideally between 50°F to 75°F (10°C to 24°C).
- They can tolerate light frost but should be protected from extreme heat.
Care & Maintenance:
- Weeding: Keep the area free of weeds, as they compete for nutrients. Be careful not to disturb the shallow beet roots when weeding.
- Mulching: Use mulch around the plants to retain moisture and keep the soil cool.
- Fertilizing: Apply a balanced fertilizer (5-10-10) before planting, and once more when the plants are about 4 inches tall for healthy root development.
