1. Growing Rocket (Rucola Coltivata) Seeds

  • Choosing Seeds:
Rocket, or arugula, is available in different varieties, from wild to cultivated (Rucola Coltivata). The cultivated type tends to have broader leaves and a milder flavor compared to wild arugula, which is more peppery.

  • Soil Preparation:
Rocket grows best in loose, well-drained soil, rich in organic matter. The ideal soil pH is between 6.0 and 7.0. If your soil is heavy or clay-like, mix in some compost or sand to improve drainage.

  • Planting the Seeds:

    • Directly sow the seeds outdoors after the danger of frost has passed or indoors in seed trays.
    • Scatter the seeds in shallow furrows, about 1/4 inch (6 mm) deep. You can also broadcast seeds and lightly cover them with soil.
    • Space the rows 6-12 inches apart for optimal growth. Within rows, thin plants to about 4 inches apart once they have sprouted.
  • Germination:
Rocket seeds germinate quickly, usually within 5-10 days. Once the seedlings appear, thin them to allow proper air circulation and space for growth.

2. Caring for Rocket (Rucola Coltivata)

  • Sunlight:
Rocket thrives in full sun but also tolerates partial shade, especially in hot climates. It requires at least 4-6 hours of sunlight daily. Too much direct sun in hot weather may cause the plant to bolt, so some afternoon shade is beneficial.

  • Fertilization:
Rocket is a fast-growing leafy green and generally does not require heavy feeding. However, adding compost or a balanced fertilizer (such as 10-10-10) at planting can improve growth. A light feeding of nitrogen-rich fertilizer every few weeks will promote leaf production.

  • Weeding and Mulching:
Keep the planting area free from weeds, which can compete with rocket for nutrients and water. Applying a thin layer of mulch around the plants helps retain soil moisture, reduces weeds, and keeps the leaves clean.

  • Harvesting:
Begin harvesting leaves when they reach about 3-4 inches in length, usually around 4-6 weeks after planting. You can harvest the outer leaves, allowing the inner leaves to continue growing, or cut the entire plant down and allow it to regrow. Rocket leaves taste best when young and tender.

3. Watering Rocket (Rucola Coltivata)

  • Initial Watering:
Water the soil thoroughly after planting the seeds. Keep the soil moist during germination, but avoid waterlogging. Rocket seeds need consistent moisture to germinate well.

  • Regular Watering:
Rocket prefers evenly moist soil, but overwatering should be avoided. Water about 1 inch per week, more frequently during hot or dry weather. Keep the soil damp but not soaked, as too much water can lead to root rot.

  • Watering Tips:

    • Water early in the day to reduce evaporation and to allow the leaves to dry, which can help prevent fungal diseases.
    • Use drip irrigation or water at the base of the plant to avoid wetting the leaves, which helps minimize leaf diseases like mildew.

4. Potting Rocket (Rucola Coltivata)

  • Choosing a Pot:
Rocket can grow well in pots or containers, making it suitable for small spaces or urban gardens. Choose a container at least 6-8 inches deep with good drainage holes.

  • Soil for Pots:
Use a well-draining potting mix, enriched with compost or slow-release fertilizer. The soil should be loose and airy to support the fast-growing root system of rocket.

  • Planting in Pots:

    • Fill the container with the potting mix, leaving about an inch of space from the top.
    • Sow the seeds 1/4 inch deep and lightly cover with soil. Space the seeds 2-4 inches apart in larger pots.
    • Place the container in a sunny location where the rocket will receive at least 4-6 hours of sunlight.
  • Care for Potted Rocket:
Water potted rocket more frequently, as containers tend to dry out faster than garden beds. Ensure good drainage and avoid waterlogging the soil. You can harvest the leaves the same way as in a garden, cutting the outer leaves or snipping the whole plant.

5. Temperature and Climate for Rocket (Rucola Coltivata)

  • Optimal Temperature:
Rocket grows best in cooler temperatures, between 50°F and 65°F (10°C to 18°C). It can tolerate slightly warmer temperatures, but extreme heat will cause the plant to bolt (go to seed), making the leaves bitter.

  • Cool-Weather Crop:
Rocket is considered a cool-weather crop and can be grown in spring and fall. In hot climates, it's best to plant rocket in the fall or early spring. Summer heat can cause it to flower prematurely, which affects the taste of the leaves.

  • Frost Tolerance:
Rocket is relatively cold-hardy and can tolerate light frosts, especially once established. In mild climates, rocket can be grown through the winter with some protection like row covers.

  • Growing in Hot Climates:
In warmer climates, plant rocket in areas that receive morning sun and afternoon shade to prevent bolting. Mulching around the plants can also help keep the soil cool and retain moisture. If growing in pots, move them to a shaded area during the hottest part of the day.
